Partnering with Parents

- Support student as they overcome mistakes.
- Engage in character development with an emphasis on ethical decision-making and integrity.
- Resolve conflict at the lowest level possible through education, facilitation and support.
- Foster a safe and welcoming community.
- Relationship
- CRSCS has a very student oriented philosophy that works with students to promote civility within the Fort Collins community and as a member of the CSU family. We recognize students are at different places within their development, however, and we work to ensure that we are taking into account what is best for the student, community and university when meeting with students about mistakes they have made.
- While Colorado State University believes it is appropriate to create and maintain adult relationships with students, there are circumstances in which the University will seek and welcome parental involvement to combat the serious issues related to substance abuse and safety for students who are under the age of 21. The U.S. Congress passed an amendment to the Federal Educational Rights to Privacy Act in 1998, removing restrictions regarding disclosing information to parents about their student’s involvement in drug, alcohol or violence-related infractions on campus. The guidelines developed by CSU for parental notification include:
- When a student engages in one serious action which represents an imminent risk to the health, safety, or welfare of the student or other members of the campus community.
- The student engages in a pattern of problem behaviors, which could result in termination of the residence hall contract or probation, suspension, dismissal or expulsion from the University.
- CRSCS will do our best to respond to any concerns you may have. Additionally, within the guidelines listed above, we will talk with you about emergency situations or your student’s disciplinary record related to alcohol, drugs or violence.
- Assessment Driven Process
- According to the Drugs, Alcohol and You Programs office, recent research suggests that there is a continuum of substance abuse by today’s college students. On one end of this continuum, there are a growing number of students who are committed to abstinence. On the other end, there is a significant number of students who started their use at earlier ages and are using substances at rates that define them as clinically dependent. Recent research suggests that as many as 37% of current students can be classified as substance abusing or dependent. The needs of students vary widely along this continuum of use.
The DAY Programs office uses a web based alcohol and drug instrument that is comprehensive and easy to use. Regardless of a person's history of use, the DAY Programs office has a service designed to meet that need. There is no penalty for being truthful on the instrument. In fact, the services are most effective when students provide accurate information concerning their use.
When discussing incidents of alcohol or drugs, we make referrals to the DAY office based on risk levels and self reported behavior, rather than the numbers of incidents students are involved in.
- Partnering & Parents Role
- We know that student development is not solely influenced by our office, which is why we hope we can create a partnership with you in the future, to help support you and your student to work through mistakes that were made. It is how we learn from those mistakes that makes us a stronger person in the future, and we recognize the potential that your student has as a member of the CSU community.
- The first step in this partnership is communication between us and the student, you and the student, and you and our office. We are happy to work with you on ways to jump start that communication with your student and invite you to visit the resources listed in this brochure for more support.
